Here is what the Lord has done through the month of May and what is coming up in June.
- Holiday Program:
During the children’s school break our staff conducted activities for all our sponsored children. The children come on different times depending on their school grade. They have a Bible lesson tailored to their level of understanding. This break the theme was “Boldness” and was based on Acts 4. The children were challenged to be bold in their faith in a culture that has chosen to compromise Christian values for worldly ones. They learned that our boldness is from the Holy Spirit indwelling us as he did Peter in Acts 4. Each group that comes receives a hearty meal, participates in games and fellowship and learns that we at 2 Roads are all family!
The Alumni came alongside us this break to come up with the game competitions (volleyball). They did a great job organizing teams and every one had a great time. They also came on a Saturday and conducted Bible teaching sessions. I told Amos that the Alumni coming to join with the staff is the best evidence of transformed lives!!
- Meeting with all parents and children:
Before the students returned to school our staff met with all of them and their parents or guardians. This is a crucial meeting that helps set the standards and guidelines for the next school term.
This time, our theme for the meeting was “THE STONE THAT WAS REJECTED BY A BUILDER AND LATER BECAME A CORNERSTONE” Amos first explained the context to this scripture, that this was about Christ who was rejected and yet became the very foundation for our salvation. He then shared about how much rejection these kids have had in their lives, some by their parents, relatives and community in general! He shared how often they were not given a chance to succeed but that with God’s faithfulness, he brought 2roads into their lives; To nurture and activate that which God has called them to be, to come alongside their families and launch their dreams. Amos empathized that with their willingness, we shall develop the next cornerstones together – built on Christ as the chief cornerstone! He cited great examples of kids who heeded our counsel and advise like Asaph, Nixon, Jim, Davis Brenda and others whose potential has been unleashed. Nixon shared his personal journey. He explained how much he had failed on not living up to his God given potential due to laxity, not listening and always having excuses. He told the kids that the day Amos spoke about the need to pioneer certain things in our families and lives and set our next generation on a new path is the day he woke up which changed his life’s trajectory and led him to receiving top marks his senior year. He encouraged the kids to listen to the staff’s advice and follow their good example. Amos concluded that if there is any one out there who dreams big, maximizes their effort and strives for a noble character, we will support them in every way possible, cheer them on and above all pray for them. It was a super good meeting!
Back to school:
We thank all our sponsors for your faithfulness in giving so that our 150+ students can be back in school! You are helping to provide them with a brighter future and our staff is sharing God’s word and plan with them so that they can become what God has called them to be! It’s always exciting to see the distribution of scholastic materials and supplies. Special credit to Rosette and Julie for procuring things on time as needed. All the students have settled in school well. We really praise God for his provision.
- High risk students:
Over the break our staff identified and met with students who they felt were at risk of dropping out of school or leaving our program. In meeting one-on-one with these children they have seen improvement in their attitudes.
However, through such conversations we have learned that some students are at risk of child abuse. Our staff has specifically identified 2 boys who they have begun intervention with. In one case the father has been given additional training and counseling in the other case the boy has been taken in at the junction for protection until we can process legal custody.
